Tragedy During a Standard Call

In Vero Beach, Florida, a routine eviction turned into a fatal shooting. On November 21, 2025, deputies from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a gated home in the Bermuda Club neighborhood to carry out a court-ordered eviction.

Deputy Terri Sweeting‑Mashkow, a 25‑year veteran, was fatally shot inside the home. Sheriff Eric Flowers described the incident as “indiscriminate firing” by the eviction target.
Other Victims: Injury and Loss

Another deputy, Florentino “Tino” Arizpe, was wounded in the shoulder and has since begun recovering.
A locksmith, later identified as 76‑year-old David Long, was critically injured during the shooting.
The Shooter and His Background

The suspect was identified as 37‑year-old Michael Halberstam, who lived in the home being evicted.
Authorities say Halberstam opened fire when deputies entered the house, and they returned fire.
Later, Halberstam was wounded in the exchange and died of his injuries on November 23.
